At the meeting of Thursby Lodge on Thursday September 9th 1937 Bro. Garnett Mitchell mentioned that there had been a desire from a number of Junior Brethren of Thursby Lodge to form a new Lodge and appealed for financial support for the formation thereof. The Secretary said the matter had been considered by the Lodge Committee and a resolution had been passed recommending the members to support the formation of a new Lodge. A sum of £500 was transferred from Lodge funds to the Founders of the proposed new Lodge. A petition was signed in open Lodge by the Worshipful Master and the Senior and Junior Wardens. Thus it was that Ormerod Lodge came into being and was duly consecrated on Saturday 22nd January 1938 at the Masonic Temple, Nelson Square, Burnley, in the new Lodge room which had been consecrated on Friday 8th October 1937. The first Worshipful Master of Ormerod Lodge was W. Bro. Thomas Jackson P.P.G.D. That the Lodge be called “Ormerod Lodge” was proposed by W. Bro. C. H. Williams and seconded by Bro. C. P. Whitehead at a Committee Meeting held on October 4th 1937. It is so called after Ormerod House which according to the book of “Burnley in Old Picture Postcard” by Richard Catlow was one of the finest houses in the area, once the home of the wealthy Thursbys. So this was a natural progression for the Daughter Lodge to have a name associated with the Thursbys. Also of relevance that a founder of Ormerod Lodge W. Bro. J. G. Coates P.P.G.D. from whom the Lodge received the Silver Collar which the Master wears resided at Ormerod House. |
